Irish Immigration 1845-1900 (Potatoe Famine)
When the potatoe famine struck the immigration went way up. in 1820's 3,614 were immigrants. Then later in the 1800's when it was the it was the potatoe famine it went up to 914,119. That means 910,505 more people came around the potatoe famine. Irish people came over because the condidtions there in Ireland were very poor. The potatoes rotted in the ground. That is how the potatoe famine started. Their was nothing to eat because thats all they really ate. People starved to death over the poatatoe famine. The bad thing was that the population never really bounced back up. Irish people came over because they were drawn to the jobs and opertunites here in America. They were also probaly drwn to the whole food thing. Considering that there was not to much food for them to eat, due to the fact of the potatoe famine. The Irish normaly settled along the east coast. The Irish usally settled in one place for generations. They also tended to all settle toghther. The Irish around that time usallt bcame empolyed in unskilled jobs. Such as laborers. They were probaly farmers before they came to America. But it was hard to have enough money for a farm here in America.
